School board rejects a 6.5-cent debt-rate increase and adopts a $1.4252 rate, 6-1, covering the debt shortfall from the general fund for one year
Enrollment stood at 4,878, up 176 against a forecast of 99. Sixteen class size waivers, Policy Update 97 and the appraisal district nominations also passed.
The Aledo ISD Board of Trustees met Sept. 16, 2013, with all seven trustees present. The high school's FFA officers presented. Superintendent Derek Citty reported enrollment of 4,878, an increase of 176 students against a predicted growth of 99, and said he would meet with the demographer. The board commended the outgoing PTO president and introduced the new PTO board. Dr. David Tillman reported 20 new Community Partners; Hoyt Harris urged donations on the Sept. 19 National Day of Giving, which the foundation would match. A resident spoke about the proposed tax increase. The minutes and financial reports passed 7-0 after a clarification requested by Bobby J. Rigues.
Deputy Superintendent Lynn McKinney said parent survey results would be posted by campus; Denise Dugger reported 357 students in summer school and 55 in the virtual school network, and gave the ESL annual report.
Citty recommended taking approximately $1.6 million from fund balance and adopting a 6.5-cent increase in the interest and sinking rate. On a motion by Johnny Campbell seconded by David Davis, the board instead voted to leave both rates unchanged for one year and pay the debt service shortfall from the general fund, and after a recess adopted the ordinance setting the 2013 rate at $1.4252 per $100 of valuation, $1.1700 for maintenance and operations and $0.2552 for interest and sinking, 6-1, with Rigues against. It then approved, each 7-0: Policy Update 97; a class size waiver for 16 classes; a change to the board operating procedure manual; the education foundation memorandum of understanding; and re-nominations to the Tarrant and Parker county appraisal district boards. Trustees thanked the CFO and the community and cautioned that the rate was for one year only. The meeting adjourned at 9:21 p.m.
