Sheriff's overnight contract renewal: the chief's memo says the city expects its own 24-hour coverage in January 2027

The renewal was on the Sept. 3 consent agenda. The agreement runs from Oct. 1 at $18,030.50 a month for 4,000 hours of service and can be ended on 30 days' written notice.

The Sept. 3 council packet carried the renewal of the Agreement for Police Protection between the City of Aledo and Parker County on the consent agenda. Police Chief Carol Riddle's memo says the contract was originally for three deputies providing 24-hour, seven-day coverage, and that with the establishment of the Aledo Police Department in January 2026 it was reduced to two deputies covering 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The renewal continues those hours for FY 2027.

The memo states that with the adopted FY 2027 budget the department's staffing will increase to allow 24-hour, seven-day coverage by the department itself, which is expected to begin in January 2027, at which point the sheriff's contract can be terminated with 30 days' written notice. The FY 2027 police budget includes an allocation of $55,000 for the contract.

The agreement itself is effective the 1st day of October, 2026, and sets the city's payment at $18,030.50 monthly, or $216,366.00 annually, as consideration for 4,000 hours of services. The first payment is due Oct. 1, 2026, with like payments on the first of each month until the whole sum is paid.

The Sept. 3 minutes, which will show whether the renewal passed on the consent agenda, had not been posted on CivicClerk as of Sept. 6.
