Aledo adopts a $0.352415 tax rate and its 2027 budget; no one spoke at the hearings
The rate is 0.83% below last year's but above the no-new-revenue rate, so state law required the council to vote separately to ratify the revenue increase. Both votes were unanimous.
The Aledo City Council adopted the fiscal year 2027 budget and a property tax rate of $0.352415 per $100 of valuation on Thursday, Aug. 20, by unanimous roll-call votes on Ordinances 2026-O-21 and 2026-O-22. Mayor Shane Davis opened and closed public hearings on both items; no one came forward to speak.
Last year's rate was $0.355353, so the new rate is 0.83% lower. It is above the no-new-revenue rate of $0.349703, the rate that would raise the same total as last year from the same properties, which is why the motion, in the language state law requires, described the adoption as effectively a 0.77% increase, and why the council took a separate vote under Local Government Code Section 102.007 to ratify the revenue increase. Of the total, $0.267298 is for maintenance and operations and $0.085117 for debt service on the 2022 certificates that built the municipal complex.
The rate also sits above the voter-approval rate of $0.309383 and a hair under the de minimis rate of $0.352416, the ceiling smaller cities may use without an automatic election. The council had adopted the certified roll on Aug. 6: $1,057,685,374 in taxable value, including $41,014,945 in new improvements and a tax-increment zone with $69,846,799 of incremental value. The city expects about $2.54 million in maintenance-and-operations property tax revenue this year.
The council also approved the fiscal 2027 employee benefits package. The fiscal year begins Oct. 1. Also on Aug. 20, Richard Nelson introduced himself to the council as The Community News' new reporter.
