Three new council members seated; Summer Jones becomes mayor pro tem

The Aledo City Council seated three new members after the May election. A reception before the May 7 meeting honored outgoing Mayor Pro Tem Shawna Ford and welcomed Ben Clark (Place 1), Matt Poston (Place 3) and Melanie Allen (Place 4). Summer Jones now serves as mayor pro tem, and Todd Covington holds Place 2. Shane Davis is mayor.

The council meets the first and third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. in the council chambers at the Aledo Municipal Complex, 200 Old Annetta Road, and meetings stream on the city's YouTube channel. City Secretary Staci King handles agendas and public information requests.

Council takes up golf carts and e-bikes again, a county water agency, and a $932,729 FM 1187 engineering contract

Thursday's agenda also carried the renewal of the city's night-shift contract with the sheriff's office and a rezoning on Robert Street. Votes will be reported when the minutes are published.

Aledo adopts a $0.352415 tax rate and its 2027 budget; no one spoke at the hearings

The rate is 0.83% below last year's but above the no-new-revenue rate, so state law required the council to vote separately to ratify the revenue increase. Both votes were unanimous.

Police chief asks the council to consider rules for e-bikes, golf carts and other small vehicles

Chief Carol Riddle brought the issue to the council on June 4 as the new department builds out traffic enforcement. It returned as a work session on Sept. 3.
