Aledo vs Waco Midway score: Bearcats lose 21-28

Waco Midway led 14-0 after one quarter and 21-14 at halftime, and each team scored once in the fourth quarter, per the MaxPreps quarter line: Midway 14, 7, 0, 7; Aledo 0, 14, 0, 7. Midway had 21 first downs to Aledo's 14; each team was penalized four times, Midway for 28 yards and Aledo for 35, per MaxPreps.

As called on 92.1 Hank FM by Kevin Lonnquist and Kyle Hix at Tim Buchanan Stadium: Midway struck first on a four-play, 58-yard drive that ended with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Cort Strickland to Jacoby Hamilton, who got behind the coverage on the outside, and Lathan Whisenton followed with a 45-yard touchdown run straight up the A-gap, untouched, for 14-0. In between, Jordan Hall returned a kickoff 89 yards for a score that was wiped out by a penalty, the first of two special-teams plays the crew would come back to. The broadcast also noted the streak the Bearcats had carried into the season, 328 games with at least a field goal, which had ended the week before.

Wyatt Dorsey answered 38 seconds into the second quarter with a 23-yard touchdown run, a delayed keeper up the middle that finished a drive of 4:48, for 14-7. Midway went back up two scores on an 11-play, 66-yard drive, converting a fourth down on the way, with a 22-yard pass from Strickland to Hamilton. Hall then intercepted Strickland, and Aledo turned it into points before the half: on third-and-15, Tre Williams found Maddox Nurse in double coverage for a 29-yard touchdown, the first time the two had connected this season and, the crew said, Williams' first touchdown pass as a Bearcat. Halftime was 21-14, and ran long; the clock did not start until Midway's band began its show. At the half the crew had Williams 5 of 11 and Aledo 1 of 6 on third down but 2 of 2 on fourth.

The third quarter was scoreless. Aledo opened the fourth lined up for a 25-yard field goal, a flag pushed it back to 30, and Hudson Parks' first attempt of the season missed. The defense forced a Midway turnover, and seven plays and 33 yards later I'zahrion Roberts scored from the 7, his first touchdown of the season, to tie it at 21. Whisenton broke a tackle at the 10 and walked in from 16 yards with 3:15 left for 28-21, his second touchdown of the night, and Aledo's last possession ended on fourth down after a timeout with 1:51 to play. The crew's postgame numbers: Aledo over 200 yards rushing, no turnovers (one fumble, recovered), 2 of 3 on fourth down; Hamilton seven catches for 135 yards and two scores; Roberts 16 carries; Nurse three catches for 66 yards; Caden Palmquest one for 35. The call closed by naming the two plays that decided a one-score game: the kickoff return called back and the missed field goal.
