School board adopts the 2017-2018 budget over one dissent, adopts the tax rate, and calls part of the 2007 refunding bonds early
Trustee Bobby J. Rigues voted against the budget. In their comments trustees said the hour's work included a 3% raise, $1.27 million in bonds paid off to save $550,000, no tax rate increase and $1.5 million added to fund balance.
The Aledo ISD Board of Trustees met in special session Aug. 28, 2017, with six trustees present. A public hearing on the 2017-2018 budget and proposed tax rate ran from 7:04 to 7:12 p.m., with one resident speaking about the budget, taxes and the bond.
The board adopted the 2017-2018 budget, 5-1, with Bobby J. Rigues voting against; approved a resolution calling a portion of the Unlimited Tax Refunding Bonds, Series 2007, for redemption before maturity, 6-0; adopted the 2017-2018 tax rate as presented in an attachment the minutes reference but do not reproduce, 6-0; and approved the final amended budget for 2016-2017, 6-0.
In their comments, trustees said the meeting's actions approved a 3% salary increase for teachers and employees, paid off $1.27 million in bonds to save the district $550,000, kept the tax rate unchanged, added $1.5 million to fund balance, and turned a $600,000 deficit in the 2016-2017 budget into a balanced one, and praised Chief Financial Officer Earl Husfeld. The meeting adjourned at 8:07 p.m.
