Council rejects the golf cart and e-bike ordinance in favor of education first, and appoints Cass Callaway municipal judge
The council also backed TxDOT's federal application for a grade separation at RM 2871 and Chapin School Road, and proclaimed the Bearcats' third state baseball title.
The Aledo City Council met June 18, 2026, at 200 Old Annetta Road with Mayor Shane Davis, Mayor Pro Tem Summer Jones and Councilmembers Todd Covington, Matthew Poston and Melanie Allen present and Councilmember Ben Clark absent. A resident thanked staff for the Memorial Day flags in the Veterans Plaza, asked that the memorial brick program be advertised again, and raised concerns about Oncor projects in the area.
Police Chief Carol Riddle presented Ordinance No. 2026-O-18, which would have renamed Chapter 77 of the code from Traffic to Traffic and Vehicles and added regulations for golf carts, neighborhood electric vehicles, other recreational off-highway vehicles, bicycles and micromobility devices. The draft incorporated state law and the provisions the council had discussed: helmets for children under 17, sidewalk riding for children under 17 where sidewalks exist, golf cart passengers limited to the number of seats, no children under 4 in golf carts, and a prohibition on other specialty vehicles on streets within the city limits. After a lengthy discussion in which members raised concerns about the regulations and suggested community education as the first step, the council voted unanimously to deny the ordinance.
The council unanimously approved Resolution No. 2026-R-11 appointing Cass Robert Callaway chief municipal judge of the Aledo Municipal Court and approving a professional services agreement.
On the consent agenda the council approved a letter of support for TxDOT's application to the Federal Railroad Administration's Rail Crossing Elimination Program for the RM 2871/Chapin School Road grade separation project, canceled the July 2 regular meeting, and approved the minutes of May 28, June 4 and June 8.
After an executive session from 6:49 to 7:30 p.m. on the Dean Ranch development, Aledo and Fort Worth v. Willow Park, the municipal judge appointment and downtown development, with no action taken, Davis read a proclamation recognizing the Aledo High School baseball team, which won the Class 5A Division I state title on June 5, 2026, the school's third state baseball title, under head coach Chad Barry. City Manager Candice Edmondson said the city's new website is scheduled to launch July 20 and updated the council on remaining construction at City Hall. The meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
