The Aledo ISD Board of Trustees met Feb. 20, 2017, with President Jay Stringer and Trustees Bobby J. Rigues, Dr. David Tillman and Forrest Collins present. McAnally Intermediate presented its Morning Mile and BIGG Club. Superintendent Derek Citty reported enrollment of 5,456 students, staffing under way for the new school, a posted director of communications position, and that the district's A-F resolution had been delivered to the Texas Association of School Administrators alongside about 500 other districts'. The board recognized all-state band and choir students and agreed by consensus to hold work sessions before regular meetings as needed. Education foundation executive director Shawn Callaway reported $128,000 in gala sponsorships and grants including $2,000 for a diabetic alert dog for a student. Rigues previewed the legislative conference and House Bill 1333 on testing. A student spoke during public comment about naming the new elementary school.
The consent agenda, approved 4-0, included a charter school consideration. Chief Financial Officer Earl Husfeld and Buford Thompson Construction reviewed Elementary No. 5's schedule and contingency, and Citty said scoreboard sponsorships could pay off the sign and sound system in five years without tax dollars, with later profits covering maintenance and the balance going to the general fund.
The board approved two additional class size waivers each at Stuard and Vandagriff for the spring, 3-1, with Rigues against; a remote instruction waiver, 4-0; postponement of the 2017 superintendent goals, 4-0; a fiber optic pathway survey proposal, 4-0; and the naming of Elementary No. 5 as Mary D. and F. Howard Walsh Elementary School, 4-0. After an executive session from 8:49 to 9:41 p.m., it approved administrator contracts, 4-0, and adjourned at 9:44 p.m.
