Enrollment stood at 5,172, eight short of the demographer's projection. The board approved rooftop units for McAnally, security camera servers, the audit engagement and a bond-refunding budget amendment, and hired the learning center's principal.
The Aledo ISD Board of Trustees met May 16, 2016, with six trustees present at the start. The retiring Aledo Learning Center principal reflected on 17 years in the district. The board approved the official election results, Forrest Collins winning Place 4 with 883 votes and Bobby J. Rigues winning Place 5 with 1,199 votes, 6-0, and both took the oath, Collins taking his seat. The board recognized a National Merit finalist, the girls state golf team, state track and UIL students and a state history paper qualifier.
After an executive session on officer qualifications, Hoyt Harris nominated Jay Stringer and Collins nominated Rigues for president; Stringer won 5-2. David Davis was elected vice president, 6-1, with Rigues against, and Harris secretary, 7-0. Superintendent Derek Citty reported sixteen first-year certified nursing assistant students passing certification, both robotics teams qualifying for state, and enrollment of 5,172 students, eight short of Templeton Demographics' projection. He expressed disappointment with the Texas Supreme Court's school finance decision and stated that Aledo ISD students will use restrooms according to the gender on their birth certificates, with accommodations available on an individual basis. Nine residents, counting a couple listed together as two, spoke about district guidelines concerning transgender bathrooms. Rigues reported on the school finance litigation.
The consent agenda passed 7-0. The School Health Advisory Council gave its end-of-year report, Chief Financial Officer Earl Husfeld reported the 2016-2017 budget on schedule with certified values due at the end of July, and Ross Rivers of VLK Architects gave a bond snapshot. The board approved, each 7-0: the 2015-2016 audit firm engagement letter; a budget amendment related to bond refunding; rooftop units for McAnally Intermediate; and servers to store security camera footage. After an executive session from 10:34 to 11:22 p.m., it approved teacher contracts and Cheryl Jones as Aledo Learning Center principal, each 7-0. Trustees welcomed Collins and voiced appreciation for Citty's restroom statement, and the meeting adjourned at 11:26 p.m.
