The Aledo ISD Board of Trustees held its second special town hall meeting on proposed elementary boundaries Nov. 9, 2016, at the Aledo High School auditorium with six trustees present and Vice President David Davis presiding. Superintendent Derek Citty briefly presented the district's history, projected enrollment and the next bond program, then opened the floor.
The minutes record 25 numbered concerns. Recurring themes: children who would leave Vandagriff, Coder and Stuard for the new school and the friendships and adjustment involved; Coder's loss of parent volunteers and questions about socioeconomic balance; commute times, bus rides, railroad tracks and two major arteries on the way to the new school in the north; requests to let current kindergartners stay, to grandfather students, or to hold the change until Elementary No. 6 opens; a special-needs child's resources and a child's medical needs far from a parent; whether the city's infrastructure planning figured in; whether a hybrid keeping fifth graders at McAnally could work; why the district builds small elementary schools; how many houses are being developed; and one speaker who said the consistent theme that no one wants to move showed the schools were doing a good job. Citty thanked the audience, and trustees asked for patience, said they would give reasons for the decision, and said they were looking at more than numbers. The meeting adjourned at 9:23 p.m.
