School board calls a $72,950,000 bond election for Nov. 7, 2017, in two propositions, after defeating a $1 million cut and moving turf money to contingency
Eight residents spoke. Public comment time was extended to 60 minutes, the accountability ratings were previewed, and the education foundation reported $265,000 given in the past year.
The Aledo ISD Board of Trustees met Aug. 21, 2017, with all seven trustees present once Vice President Hoyt Harris arrived at 6:08 p.m. The board opened with an executive session from 6:07 to 7:08 p.m. on the locations of Middle School No. 2 and Elementary No. 6, with no action. Superintendent Derek Citty reported on convocation, Executive Director Denise Dugger previewed the accountability ratings released Aug. 15, and the board welcomed three new specialists and recognized a middle school science teacher as a state finalist for the Presidential Award. Education foundation executive director Shawn Callaway said the foundation gave $265,000 to the district in the past year with a goal of $289,000 for the next. Eight residents spoke, on the budget, the M&O tax rate, the bond proposition language, the superintendent's contract, the bond and test scores, property taxes and options for the growing student population.
The consent agenda, approved 7-0, included the attendance credits agreement, the supplies vendor list, 2017-2018 hazardous routes, a Tarrant County 4-H resolution, two waivers and adult meal prices. Chief Financial Officer Earl Husfeld and Buford-Thompson Construction reported Walsh Elementary's completion; Deputy Superintendent Lynn McKinney presented the 2016-2017 parent and teacher survey; and Husfeld reviewed the 2017-2018 budget with a hiring schedule and proposed pay plans using TASB Model 3.
The board approved a resolution delegating approval of off-campus activities to the superintendent for attendance accounting, 7-0. A motion by Dr. David Tillman, seconded by Forrest Collins, to reduce the probable cost of Middle School No. 2 in the bond by $1,000,000 to re-evaluate rooftop units against geothermal failed 2-5. A motion to transfer $1,000,000 to the program and design contingency line and remove the $1,000,000 estimated for synthetic turf passed 7-0. The board nominated Bobby J. Rigues as delegate to the Advocacy Institute and amended policy BED(Local) to extend public comment to 60 minutes, each 7-0.
On a motion by President Jay Stringer seconded by Harris, the board voted 7-0 to call a bond election on Nov. 7, 2017, with two propositions totaling $72,950,000; the minutes' figures for the individual propositions are typed incompletely. After an executive session from 10:10 to 11:45 p.m. on the superintendent's contract, with no action, the meeting adjourned at 11:47 p.m.
