The Aledo ISD Board of Trustees met May 18, 2021, with all seven trustees present. Board secretary Katherine Springer swore in the winners of the May 2021 election: David Lear, Place 1; Jennifer Loftin, Place 2; and Jessica Brown, Place 3. Superintendent Susan Bohn shared an update on the initial steps of a long-term, sustained effort by the board and administration to address racism within the district and thanked the community for its support through the year. Forrest Collins reported on the 87th Legislative Session, and Brown on the 2019 bond projects.
Walsh Elementary, McAnally Intermediate and Daniel Ninth Grade presented on collaborative teamwork. The board commended UIL academic medalists, HOSA state finalists, ag mechanics winners, state track and field medalists, state golf qualifiers, BPA state qualifiers, state solo and ensemble qualifiers, new principals at Coder and Walsh elementaries and the communications department's TSPRA award. After a COVID-19 update from Executive Director of Student Health Services Scott Kessel, the board voted 7-0 to rescind the resolution delegating emergency authority to the superintendent, citing the lack of need for it.
The board approved, each 7-0: Construction Zone's competitive sealed proposal bid for the 2019 bond conversion of McAnally Intermediate School into the new Vandagriff Elementary School; Delta T as test-and-balance contractor and Leaf Engineers as commissioning agent for that project; CMJ Engineering Inc. as third-party materials testing consultant; an offsite drainage easement to the City of Aledo for the Parks of Aledo Bluffs; and an amendment to the FIBER11 connectivity agreement with Education Service Center Region 11 for Annetta Elementary. A Really Great Reading purchase was taken as discussion only.
Bond Progress Committee member Jeff Streetman and Director of Facilities and Construction Tyler Boswell updated the 2019 bond; Chief Financial Officer Earl Husfeld updated the 2020-2021 budget and previewed the audit request for proposals, Region 11 contracts, cafeteria furniture and, with Athletic Director Steve Wood, replacing aging athletic surfaces and converting the baseball and softball fields to synthetic turf; and Bohn and Husfeld reviewed possible uses of ESSER funds. The board returned from executive session at 11:48 p.m. to consider board officer nominees.
